With technology evolving faster than we can keep up with, we introduce our E-Newsletter to keep you informed of the new trends on the market.

We would also like to share with you Cenmetrix System News. This entails new products we have launched, updates on product features that you may not have known about and read about new clients that have put their trust in our solutions.

What is Biometrics?

what is biometrics

Biometrics is the science and technology of measuring and analyzing biological data. In information technology, biometrics refers to technologies that measure and analyze human body characteristics
such as fingerprints, eye retinas and irises, voice patterns, facial
patterns and hand measurements, for authentication purposes.

YOU are the biometric. Many people use fingerprint for biometrics,
as its more commercialized and costs less. The most accurate form of biometrics is the eye recognition.

Latest trends in Biometrics

Vein Recognition -

As scientists study deeper into the capabilities of biometrics, researches have now claimed that each person's vein structure is unique to any other. (The pattern of veins is unique to every individual). With this new discovery a new breed of technology is evolving called biometric vein recognition. This is where you place your hand over a sensor and, by detecting the vein patterns, the device is able to identify the person.

Thermal Recognition -

Recently scientists have discovered that even the thermal heat given out from our bodies/faces are unique to the other. Although still in the development stages, researchers say that by scanning the heat signals given out by a person's body, they can be recognized. This will work well for tracking large crowds walking at one given time (train stations, air ports, etc).

What our clients say...

" Cenmetrix delivered a cutting edge fingerprint system that covered the entire washing plant. The reader even recognizes the fingerprint of workers at special condition areas. A total of 17 biometric fingerprint devices were installed and used for time & attendance and access control. We are very impressed with the entire solution! "

Machines that prevent terrorism by reading emotions -

The Future. It sounds crazy, but it made a big splash in the papers not long ago. Analysis of facial expressions could soon be used to detect whether somebody is about to commit a terrorist atrocity. Students working on the system primarily plan to use it for human-machine interactions, by which robots would be able to detect and process human emotion. With regards to the crime prevention aspect, graduate Abu Sayheed Sohail said "it could be used to identify suspicious movements, to draw a security agent's attention and alert him or her to maybe take a more careful look at five or six of the people." This work has the potential to help identify people who are possible security threats by analyzing their expressions, according to two researchers developing this approach in Montreal. But that's probably years away..

Supermarkets/ Shopping centers look at going for fingerprint at checkout counters

Many grocery stores and shopping centers in the United States and Europe have successfully completed pilot tests of ID verification by fingerprint recognition. With the increasing rate of identity theft, this system has proven to be very efficient.

Cenmetrix Systems is currently doing research and development on the possibility of introducing this system to Sri Lanka. The technology to perform this system is currently available.

CCTV & Biometrics

Currently research is being done to link regular CCTV cameras with biometrics. Although still in the testing stages, researches say that a person style of walking, his shoe size, the way the persons head moves when he walks, etc that are captured on CCTV cameras can be used to analyze a person and use his biometrics for identifying that person. They call this gait recognition. Sometimes CCTVs don't capture the person's face, or it's too dark to recognize a person on the camera, this is when gait recognition is being tested. Recently courts in UK had used video analysis of a person's gait to convict a burglar, whose image was unclearly captured on a CCTV camera on his way to a crime. Only the future can tell how full proof this system will be in capturing evidence.

HSBC Installs Facial Recognition Cameras

HSBC data center employees in the UK are getting ready to smile for the camera as the bank rolls out facial recognition technology at two data centers after a successful pilot at the bank's Canary Wharf headquarters. The bank will install 10 access control systems from vendor OmniPerception. The Checkpoint cameras have been dubbed "light immune" because they are able to read and recognize faces even in low light conditions. Earlier this year Societe General also implemented biometric access controls for personnel in the wake of the Jerome Kerviel rogue trading scandal. So, does this mean biometrics are finally coming into banking's mainstream? Source: Bank Technology News - www.americanbanker.com

Did you know?

Duress Features:

On your Cenmetrix fingerprint system you can enroll a third finger called your 'duress finger' - When you are under threat and you are forced to used the fingerprint system for security access, you can place your pre-enrolled duress finger, which can trigger a silent alarm to inform the guard room or security personal that you are under threat (duress) and you have been forced to open the door. At the location of duress, the door will open as normal and the person forcing you will not know that a silent alarm has been triggered. The same can be implemented even if your using this as an attendance system.

Biostation Fingerprint:

fingerprintUpgraded versions of the biostation has RFID (125KHz, HID, Mi-Fare -13.56MHz) & Wi-Fi capabilities.

Fingerprint for Server rooms:

Many Sri Lankan companies are installing fingerprint security for their server rooms, although there are only 2 or 3 people accessing the server rooms. This is of great benefit when the audit firms visit your location and requires to see the log reports of those who have entered your server rooms/ high security areas. Many companies in the United States are going with fingerprint recognition for their server rooms/ high security areas as well for this reason.

What our clients say...

"Ultimately we got the perfect fingerprint solution for an oily and greasy environment."

Finger not being detected on the reader

We found the number one cause why employees fingers don't get recognized is that they fail to have a successful initial registration. When the employee enrolls for the first time, he/she does not place their fingers correctly. As a result, their verification on the system becomes 50% effective and their rejection rate higher. Hence they have to place their fingers a few times. Especially on the Cenmetrix capacitive sensor, since this reads against dusty/oily fingers, the employee should be recognized within 1 second. Contact us, if you feel you need more clarification on how to register the fingerprint in a correct manner.
